What Is Personal Care?

Personal care refers to the hands-on support that helps a person carry out the essential daily activities needed to maintain their health, hygiene, and dignity. It covers everything from bathing and dressing to eating, mobility, and continence management.

For most people, personal care activities happen automatically every morning and evening. But for Australians living with a disability, chronic illness, injury, or age-related condition, some or all of these tasks can become difficult to do alone. That’s where a personal care support worker comes in.

Personal care is not just about completing tasks. It is intimate, trust-based support that sets someone up for their day and enables them to participate fully in their life.

What Does Personal Care Include?

Personal care activities typically include:

  • Personal hygiene
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Toileting
  • Eating and drinking
  • Mobility and transfers
  • Skincare and wound care
  • Medication prompts
  • Overnight and complex care

What Is Personal Care in Disability?

Personal care in the context of disability means support that is tailored to a person’s specific disability-related needs. Unlike general care, personal care for people with a disability is designed to maximise independence.

Under the NDIS, personal care for people with disabilities is funded through the Core Supports budget, under the Assistance with Daily Life category. If your NDIS plan includes this funding, you can use it to engage a registered personal care provider like Homage.
