Introducing Mahnaz From Homage

Mahnaz, originally from Iran is a mum of two teenagers who moved to Australia in 2010. In 2014 she completed a Certificate in Aged Care and Disability, and soon after completed her studies for a Diploma in Nursing. Her love of nursing studies continued and she completed her Bachelor of Nursing, and she is currently waiting for her application  for Postgraduate studies in Nursing to be accepted. While she studied, she worked with an agency as a support worker, supporting different hospitals for two years and was also employed by the Whitehorse City Council.  After finishing her Bachelor’s study, she was accepted at Monash Health where she gained experience in caring for high-care patients. Currently, she is working as an ICU Nurse, as well as being a Care Professional with Homage Australia.

Why Did You Join Homage?

“As I was working at the hospital, I was looking for something to boost my income to support myself and my family to pay the mortgage and support our kids.” Mahnaz says.

She also mentioned she loves how Homage values flexibility, so each Care Professional can choose their shifts depending on preference, “you can choose what type of care you would like to provide, such as wound care,  support work, etc”.

Mahnaz says one of the biggest reasons for choosing Homage is how we value the 1-on-1 service. As she used to work for the council and hospital for a very long time, she missed the connection with the social community. It was a great opportunity for her to get off the busy, fast pace and critical work environment at the hospital and “establish a connection and bond with each patient”.

What Does a Typical Care Visit Look Like?

Mahnaz says  90% of her visits with us are focused on specialised nursing care. The service includes: dressing, injection, catheter, IV, and wound care. She highlighted that most of her care is focused on wound care, providing treatment for the patients; who recently had surgery, who have chronic skin conditions, or the elderly who have difficulty managing their condition by themselves (such as administering injections for diabetes).

Mahnaz provides nursing services for Homage once a week. She says “it is important as some conditions require ongoing treatment to avoid any infection or any unexpected sudden change.

Where possible, Mahnaz also likes to review a client’s at-home medical supplies to ensure that everything is topped up. Where it’s missing key items, she lets the Homage team know so that the family can be contacted to ensure the client always has essential supplies on hand.

What Do You Enjoy About Working at Homage the Most?

Mahnaz lists three main things she enjoys the most as a Homage Care Professional.

  • Flexibility: This is the biggest for her. Family-friendly work environment.
  • Connection: The connection between her and her patient makes her very satisfied.
  • Social contribution: This is beyond being a nurse. As a person, she feels great that the opportunity is given to be able to help someone on a daily basis. The positive contribution to society makes her happy and her kids proud of her.

How Has Working With Homage Positively Impacted Your Life?

Mahnaz says there are a few ways Homage is positively impacting her life. “Financially, of course, and the feeling of security that I am fully protected by Homage makes me feel great.”

She says that when she meets new patients, she feels like she learns a lot of things. Even though Mahnaz is the one taking care of them, she says she “feels that she learns a lot from the experience after each visit.

As I came to Australia 10-11 years ago, I have not been able to see my grandparents for the last 8 years. Taking care of each patient who’s a similar age to my grandparents or parents reminds me of them” she says. “From the bottom of my heart, it makes me happy that I can take care of someone’s loved one as much as I want to do so for my own family.” Mahnaz is happy that she can show her kids how she treats the elderly and all her patients and says it’s amazing to see her kids proud of her for being a nurse and helping our community.

What Do You Think Is the Greatest Achievement You’ve Made Since You Joined Homage?

In terms of general skills, Mahnaz says “I’ve definitely gained personal experience” in her role as a Homage Care Professional. It has helped her improve her time management, being organised, and planning as she fits Homage around her work in the ICU, her family and her social activities. In terms of technical skills, she highlighted that her knowledge has improved dynamically by seeing each patient in a 1-on-1 setting. It allows her to spend time with the patient without distraction and assess the condition in detail.

Homage has the most supportive and flexible working environment. Communication with the team is so smooth, so I highly recommend it!” says Mahnaz.
