Who Needs Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Feeding?

Individuals who have difficulty with oral feeding (e.g. dysphagia) and those who are unable to eat and drink enough to meet their daily nutrition needs will usually require Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feeding. This is to mitigate the chances of aspirating food and fluids into the lungs, which can lead to pneumonia.

A PEG is a flexible feeding tube is placed through the abdominal wall and into the stomach. PEG allows nutrition, fluids and/or medications to be put directly into the stomach, bypassing the mouth and oesophagus. PEG feeding can be temporary or permanent. Those recovering from a stroke, have had neurological trauma (head injuries), or are living with long-term neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease usually require PEG for the long term. Meanwhile, individuals with cancer of the head or neck usually need PEG while having treatment as swallowing may be affected.

Should you need help with PEG feeding, our nurses at Homage will be able to assist. However Homage nurses are not able re-insert a PEG.

In order for a Homage nurse to perform the PEG feeding procedure, the below items are required:

  • Milk feed: brand of milk and number of cans or packets

Benefits of PEG Feeding at Home

After surgery or diagnosis, our focus should be on self-care and resting well for a full recovery. However, the reality is that we tend to spend much of our time and energy working out viable care arrangements, from transportation and queues to cost management, to get the care we need after discharge.

For those with chronic conditions, visits to hospitals, clinics or treatment facilities to get nursing procedures completed can be a common and regular occurrence. However, medical appointments are often time-consuming and the commute can be costly and a hassle, especially for those with mobility constraints.

Sometimes, we may also suddenly find ourselves in need of urgent nursing care due to unforeseen circumstances, such as needing PEG feeding due to difficulty in swallowing. Speed is key in such scenarios. Travelling to a care facility and waiting in line may not be possible.
