What is Respite Care?

As family carers, we often put the needs and interests of our loved ones ahead of our own, taking care of their needs 24/7. Over time, the physical, emotional and mental exhaustion can lead to caregiver burnout. Besides taking a toll on our health, caregiver burnout also affects the quality of care we provide for our loved ones, which is why taking regular breaks is important.

With respite care, you can get short-term care support for your loved ones. This allows you to take a break from caregiving to attend to your own needs, from just a single day to a few weeks at a time.

Services Provided Under Respite Care

Personal Care

Assist with the activities of daily living (ADLs) – eating, bathing, getting dressed, toileting, transferring, and continence.

Medication Reminders

No more missed doses. Our carers help to remind your loved ones to take their pills at the allotted time.

Staying Active

Keep the mind and body active and alert with physical exercises and stimulating brain activities.

Nursing Care

Monitor and administer nursing procedures from tube feed and suctioning to injections and wound care.

Night Care

Care provided through the night to assist with toileting or nursing needs, prevent wandering and reduce fall-risk.

Meet & Plan

Companionship

Befriend and engage through conversations, interactive activities and outdoor trips.

Who is Respite Care For?

All carers can benefit from respite services. If our loved one was recently discharged from a hospital post-surgery, additional care support and expertise can help. It can be difficult to cope with our loved one’s care needs single-handedly. Other times, we may be caught up in a work or family emergency that requires us to be somewhere else at a short notice. Sometimes, we simply need a break from caregiving and that’s fine too!

Common Reasons For Engaging Respite Care

  • Caregivers need a break from caregiving
  • Caregivers have important commitments to attend to
  • Caregiver is scheduled for medical treatments
  • Families need support with post-hospitalisation care

Types Of Respite Care

Everyone has different reasons for engaging respite care and depending on your unique circumstance, respite care can be personalised to your care needs. Broadly, we can classify respite care into 2 different types:

Emergency Respite

Emergency respite care is suitable for family caregivers who need to engage respite care at short notice, such as when the caregiver falls ill or when a family or work emergency crops up.

At Homage, you can share your care needs with our Care Advisors and we’ll match you to the most suitable caregiver within 48 hours.

Planned Respite

Planned respite care is for carers who can foresee and anticipate when they need to engage respite care, such as when the helper is going on home leave or when care is needed post-hospitalisation.

Whether you need short-term respite care or long-term visits, we can help. Book care slots from 1-hour onwards.

Top Questions About Respite Care

Service FAQ

What are the benefits of respite care?

Respite care can be a win-win for both you and your loved ones.

Just like the loved ones you care for, you deserve and need care and support to ensure your well-being. Engaging respite care allows you to have peace of mind as you take a break to recharge and maintain your own physical and mental health, while your loved one receives safe, professional care.

When you return to caregiving, you will feel more refreshed and ready to deliver top-quality care again, which benefits both you and your loved ones.

How long can you have respite care?

Respite care is meant to provide short-term caregiving relief for carers. Whether you are planning a one-off weeks-long trip or wish to take periodic breaks over the long-term, you can engage respite care.

In fact, you can even engage respite care for just an hour or two, while you run errands or take a short break.

How do I find a suitable respite care option?

In Australia, family carers can get respite care for their loved ones at senior care centres, nursing homes, or within the comfort of their home.

There are several factors that you should consider when deciding on the arrangement that’s best for you and your loved ones. These include:

  • Duration of care
  • Level of care required
  • Cost of respite care
  • Service provider’s availability
  • Urgency (wait times for centres may be longer)
  • You and your loved one’s preferences

Most importantly, you and your loved ones should be comfortable with the arrangement and quality of care received. This is why it’s always good to discuss with your loved one before deciding on a particular arrangement. For example, some seniors enjoy socialising with their peers, which mean they may be more suitable for group settings. For others who prefer having their own space and the privacy of their own home, home care may be a more suitable option.

What is the shortest duration for a respite care visit?

The duration of a Homage respite care visit starts from just one hour, depending on your loved one’s needs.

Does Homage provide 24-hour respite care service?

Yes, we do provide 24-hour respite care services at home. Two Homage Care Professionals will be scheduled for the visits, and care will be split into 12-hour shifts to support you and your loved ones round-the-clock each day.

What are Homage respite care packages?

We have interim to longer-term respite care packages with varying care durations so that you and your loved one can find a care package which best fit your needs and preferences. How fast will I receive the respite care service?
