Get Care SupportWhat Happens When You Have a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when blood supply to parts of our brain is reduced or interrupted. This deprives our brain tissue of the nutrients and oxygen necessary for its survival. Within minutes, the cells start to die, impeding our brain functions.
To minimise the impact of stroke, being able to spot the early signs of stroke and getting prompt treatment is crucial.
One Stroke Every 19 Minutes
In 2020, more than 27,000 Australians experienced a stroke for the first time — this translates to one stroke every 19 minutes.
Today, almost 450,000 Australians are living with the effects of stroke.
Caring for a Loved One Recovering From a Stroke
Strokes often strike suddenly and without warning, and the impact on each individual varies depending on the part of the brain affected by the interrupted blood supply and the extent of damage to the brain.
The road to recovery can be tough mentally and physically, especially after losing the ability to speak, eat and/or move about. The support of a loved one can be especially important during this time. Having a dedicated team of medical professionals for stroke recovery can also help in helping the affected individual regain independence as much as possible.

Top Questions About Stroke Recovery
How do I care for someone post-stroke?
There are many ways we can support a loved one recovering from a stroke. From educating ourselves and managing finances, to making home modifications and helping with daily activities, being a family caregiver to someone recovering from a stroke is no mean feat. Sometimes, seeking professional care support can be beneficial, not only for the caregiver but also for the care recipient to receive quality care.
What happens after a stroke?
A stroke is a medical emergency. A person with a stroke will most likely be admitted to the emergency department immediately. Depending on the type of stroke and its severity, you will be given appropriate medication and may need to spend time in intensive or acute care.
Stroke rehabilitation should begin as soon as possible, once the condition is stabilised. A stroke rehabilitation team usually includes doctors, nurses, neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists.
Stroke rehabilitation aims to help us relearn skills that may have been lost. Depending on the type of stroke and the extent of damage to our brain, different forms of therapy may be required. For those with mobility issues, physiotherapy may be required. If speech, language or swallowing abilities are affected, speech therapy can help. For those who need to re-learn how to perform everyday activities, an occupational therapist can help.
Upon hospital discharge, stroke rehabilitation should continue. This can be done at an inpatient rehabilitation unit, at a subacute rehabilitation facility, or at home. If your ability to perform activities of daily living has been affected, it can be helpful to have a family member or professional caregiver around throughout your recovery.
Most of the effects of stroke should improve with rehabilitation. If in doubt, always consult your stroke rehabilitation team.
How fast will I receive support with stroke recovery?
